Classic Euro Moments: Davor Suker v Peter Schmeichel

May 15th, 2008 | By: chris | 1 Comment »

You can pluralize this one. Back in 1996 Denmark was defending their title having won the whole thing back in ‘92. In the second group game, Croatia’s superstar, Davor Suker, went up against Denmark’s superstar, Peter Schmeichel. The rest, as they say, is history. The matchup was won by Davor Suker, and with oh so much style.

Davor’s chip over Schemeichel is memorable and a great goal in its own right, but it’s the one that never was that’s so tantalizing. After catching Schemichel off his line, Suker grew a giant pair of cojones and audaciously attempted to beat the best goalkeeper in the world from just inside his own half. Peter saved it just on the line, but that surely would’ve gone down as one of the greatest in history had it gone in. Still, I think Suker was mighty pleased with his day without it. He threw in a penalty with his chip to contribute to the 3-0 win.
