Euro 2008 Jersey Poll Tournament: Group B

May 31st, 2008 | By: Daryl | 21 Comments »

We move on to Group B in the slightly clumsily named Euro 2008 Jersey Poll Tournament. Basically we’re going to show you the jerseys from Group B, then you vote for your favourites, and the top two go through the quarterfinals.

Voting will close soon in Group A so go vote for your favourite (red) jersey if you haven’t already. Otherwise, read on to see the sartorial stylings of Austria, Croatia, Germany and Poland in Group B, and vote for your favourite at the bottom.

Another plain red jersey? Come on Austria. And come on Puma. I do sort of like the bold simplicity of just badge and jersey, but don’t you think it’s a little bit similar to the Switzerland jersey?. The all black away shirty looks interesting though, especially the number on the breast thing. And nice Austrian crest too, adds a touch of old school gravitas.

Sure, it looks a bit like a tablecloth, but in a tournament where many jerseys will be almost indistinguishable if not for the badge (see above) Croatia’s red and white squares are gloriously unique.

For obvious reasons, German jerseys should always be made by the company with three stripes. Can’t decide if I like this one though. The DFB crest trailed by the flag is a nice idea, but add in the Adidas logo and the three stars and you could argue that the chest section is a bit overcrowded.

Well, at least Puma tried something a little different here. I like the double badge approach of using both the coat of arms and the Polska football crest. But I’m a little concerned that the Puma logo in the middle looks like it’s about to maul said Polska crest.

Now vote for your favourite:

Voting is now closed. Results are as follows:

1. Croatia 53%
2. Germany 30%
3. Poland 12%
4. Austria 5%

So Croatia and Germany go through to the quarterfinals.

Is the Austria one, in fact the Czech Rep kit? Don’t like the German flag going across thier shirt, points for trying something different, but I don’t think it comes off. So i’ve gone with Poland because I like that the Puma logo is in the middle.

I voted poland!

1. I have that shirt (local town has many polish people and JJB reaching out to them)
2. “Drabik” is a name of polish origin, but I have no polish blood, but use it as a nickname
3. Others sucked!

Puma aimed for originality 2 years ago when every team had their own ‘water sign’ on the front. It was a bit over the top for me. Now they go for simplicity, but the jersyes are too similar to each other (Czech Rep, Switerland, Austria, Poland). I’d like an original project for each team, especially before a big tournament. Poland’s Puma contract ends this year, there is still no decision whether we’re gonna prolong it.

Thats true of most of the big companies now though isn’t it? The adidas ones all kinda have the same basic design, and the Nike ones do. They just add little flourishes sometimes.

“The DFB crest trailed by the flag is a nice idea, but add in the Adidas logo and the three stars and you could argue that the chest section is a bit overcrowded.”

This jersey is missing the player’s number, which is printed on the right side of the jersey and thus balances the left side with the crest and all. So that isn’t much of a problem and the picture of the jersey is thus a bit misleading.

Doesn’t matter if it was linked to a website; it’s easily the nicest, most distincive, and creative design in the tournament.

I preferred some of their older kits with blue down the sides. Also, I still dont think that they should top this group. I rate poland and germany’s above them.

Is there some sort of a spider design on Poland’s away shirt?

Thats probably just a weird reflection. Unless there is some spider connection with the nation that noone outside the country knows of?

Its is def a spider and he is going to bite Germany. That is a game to be at. Nevermind that Germany during the war killed over 6 mill Polish people. History Lesson

But Joseph…. many of the “German” players were actually born in Poland. I’m sure the Polish will want to win more for that reason, because as tragic as the war was, it was a long time ago, and although it may still be in many of the polish players’ minds, I doubt that this will be their motivation

Yea I know. I know ballack is from Poland. They really should have better rules on that situation. Anyways that is a great rivalry I want to see. The polish and there flares will be out for that game.

Michael Ballack isn’t from Poland. Piotr Trochowski, Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose were born in Poland and came to Germany as children. Trochowski when he was five, Podolski when he was two and Klose when he was eight years old. They all grew up in Germany, learned their football in Germany, played for German clubs, have German friends, speak perfect German and have German citizenship. So if you call for better rules on that situation, we can just as well give up on the whole immigration thing and send all those “foreigners” back home where they “belong”.

I stand corrected he was born in Germany. I know that he had a chance to play for Poland during the world cup but wanted to play for Germany instead. He is a dual citizen. But even with ballack I think they have little chance at euro 2008. We will see. I think Poland will win that game.

Sky sports make out that more of the Germans are actually Polish, and i didnt realise how young they had moved to Germany. Anyway, I think Germany will do very well and maybe win the comp!

After some research (wiki) I found that only the three you mentioned were born in Poland, well done. However, Neuville was born in Switzerland, but plays for Germany, as his father is German. His mother was Italian and his Grandfather was Belgian, so he really did have a pick, but obviously opted for his Father’s nationality

I’m really getting in to this. Kuranyi is brazilian born, only moving to Germany in 1997 in a move to Stuttgart. His father is German-Hungarian and his mother is Panamanian (is that how you say/write it). So he also had a difficult choice.
