Euro 2008 Jersey Poll Tournament: Group D
The final four teams enter our our Euro 2008 Jersey Poll Tournament today. We show you the national team jerseys in each group, you vote for your favourite and then the top two go to the quarterfinals. Just like the real tournament, only not on the telly. Voting is closed in Group A, closing soon in Group B and still being fiercely contested in Group C (the group of death for shirts as well as teams).
Today, it’s Group D as we compare and contrast the wardrobes of the Greece, Russia, Spain and Sweden national teams. Take a look below, and vote at the bottom.

The Greece national team jersey is nice and plain, and I like how it sticks to the two colour palette of the Greek flag. The crest is big and proud without being obnoxious too. But as with the Romania shirt, this one feels a bit too much like a surplus training top with a badge sewn onto it. It’s worth remembering (as Jan pointed out re: the Adidas Germany jersey) that there will be a number on the right hand side to balance things out, but I still don’t like the idea of the manufacturer logo going front and center.

This I like. The stripes across the middle have a nice classic feel, and the blue collar prevents the whiteness from becoming overwhelming. And I’ve just realized that with everyone of these that I write I sound more and more like Tim Gunn. Make it work Russia!

Again with the central logo, but let’s try and get past that. A Spain shirt is always about the red and yellow and how you combine the two. Instead of the pinstripe thing of recent years Adidas have gone for a sort of torso outline, which looks pretty decent. Maybe makes the players look more imposing too. Or maybe not. The yellow away shirt looks like something a goalkeeper threw away.

Umbro must be cursing Steve McClaren right now, as Sweden are their only representatives at Euro 2008. But they’ve come up with a pretty sharp looking Sweden shirt. Gold or yellow (depending on who you believe) and with a well judged blue trim on the collar. And while the Adidas logo likes to be front and center, that Umbro logo almost looks embarrassed to be there. I think he’s trying to sneak up over the shoulder of the jersey to find somewhere to hide.
Vote for your favourite below:
Voting is now closed. Results are as follows:
1. Spain 46%
2. Russia 27%
3. Sweden 19%
4. Greece 8%
The Spain jersey walks away with Group D, while the Russian jersey had enough to beat Sweden to second place. Spain and Russia will be in the quarterfinals. Back to the drawing board for Sweden and Greece.

Sweden. No doubt. It has such a Northern Aristocratic touch :p

What I have noticed as a general trend, is that alot of the shirts are reminiscent of old-school 70s kits aren’t they? Really basic.

Wow, I’m first to vote for Greece. Reasons:
a) dont like russias too much at all
b) spains and swedens only are ok
c) greeces is simple, white and nice blue
O well, my vote wont count for much

Actually that Tim Gunn comment just gave me a splash of genious. Because the US can’t settle on the same look for half a year wouldn’t it be awesome to just give it up and have the US federation and Project Runway have a challenge to design the next half-year jersey. Can’t do worse than anthracite (or 94 tiedie). And I pity the guy who tries to do it in organza and add feathers.

Most boring group by far

I disagree, Matt. I think the all-red group beat this one on boring.

Since blue is the only color that doesn’t look awful on a yellow kit, I went with Sweden. That and I can’t bring myself to vote for another red shirt. Too many red shirts. The Russian one reminds me of the world champion cycling jersey.

i agree, too many red shirts

Greece shirt looks like what I got at the end of a summer camp when I was 10.
C’mon Adidas make an effort.

Yeah, Greece is one is rather undderwhelming. I surprised myself, going for Russia. I’ve long been faithful to espana.
