Vote: Which Euro 2008 Team Has the Best Nickname?

All 16 Euro 2008 teams have nicknames, though some are more widely used than others. Many of the nicknames are simple reflections of the colour the team plays in, or variation on “the national team”.

That doesn’t make theses nicknames any less important, but for my money you can’t beat Greece’s “The Pirate Ship.” It’s so good that Sawyer from Lost could have come up with it.

All sixteen nicknames are after the jump, and you can vote for your favourite in the poll at the bottom.

Austria - Wunderteam (Wonder Team - though not since World War II)

Croatia - Vatreni (The Fiery Ones)

Czech Republic - Lokomotiva (The Locomotive)

France - Les Bleus (The Blues)

Germany - Die Nationalelf (The National Eleven)

Greece - To Peiratiko (The Pirate Ship)

Italy - Azzurri (Blues)

Netherlands - Oranje (Orange)

Poland - Bialo-Czerwoni (White-Reds)

Portugal - Selecção das Quinas (National Team of the Five)

Romania - Tricolorii (The Tricolours)

Russia - Sbornaya (Selection)

Spain - La Furia Roja (The Red Fury)

Sweden - Blågult (Blueyellow)

Switzerland - Nati (The Nats - short for Nationals)

Turkey - Ay Yıldızlılar (Crescent Stars)

Croatia - the fiery ones! Many boring ones there, orange, the blues, white-reds

Unfortunatly like the kit one everyone will just vote for thier favourite team regardless after a while.

Can’t beat Croatia’s though, Greece a close second, and Spain third.

it’s got be to be the Portugues one I’m afraid.
just for the simple fact that it is not a made up one, it’s all about history.
if you don’t know what it means try to cultivate yourself.

Did I just say Jack Sawyer? hahah I miss LOST but I mean just Sawyer. Jack wins though at everything.
Spain’s nickname is just fierce and Croatia’s comes close but I’d rather choose Greece’s instead.

c’mon, i cant possibly be the only one who thinks that the wunderteam is the best nickname!!! it says “1 votes” and you know its pretty sad when the votes is plural, bet the number is not. (where your host team spirit?)

Viva la Furia Roja!! But I kind of like “the fiery ones” too. I keep thinking of it in the context of a sentence, as in “And he passes it to the FIERY ONE!”

So Croatia gets honorable mention, in my book.

La Furia Roja, is the coolest one. It makes sense because of the color from the flag. The others, other than Croatia’s or Greece’s, seem a little boring and expected. Except for Italy. Where the hell is the blue in their flag?

it really relates to not even the history of football in the country, but the history of the country itself, relating back to king afonso defeating the moors
