Ingrid AmonViennese vocal coach Ingrid Amon (pictured) has been on Austrian TV giving advice about how to cheer for the national team.

Not sure Austrians will have all that much to cheer this summer unfortunately, but at least Amon us optimistic. She recommends all kinds of things, including some tips on actual technique, deliberately varying your cheer (which is good advice, have you ever found yourself next to someone at a game and they just shout the same thing over and over?) and getting plenty of practice in beforehand (just like players I suppose, practice for national team duty by cheering for your club.)

I’m all for Austrians cheering on their team, and all for getting them good advice on how to do it. But unfortunately, Amon recommends avoiding alcohol. That can’t be right. I’m sure alcohol doesn’t make your voice sound any better, but all football fans know that beer is good for loosening up the vocal chords, and that trading in voice quality for quantity by having a few pre-game pints is ultimately beneficial.

If you speak German, you can read the advice pdf format here. And if you speak Google Translate, you can try and read Amon’s tips in (sort of) English below:

1) The basic rule: Call and J aulen are louder and better than shouting from the neck! The voice must be up to the players on the field. Funnel front of the mouth, and long Call especially the vowels long stretch, almost a little sing …. Juhuuuuuuuuuuuu! Jaaaaaaaaa,
Heiiiiiiiiiiiiii, Toooooooor!

2) Aufwär men: In the first minutes of the match with enthusiastic Call slow start, similar Aufwärmperiode a while jogging. Only after 15 minutes to call for full performance.

3) Lautstär ke VAR iieren. Not open call, but as a siren - and abschwellende
Produce sounds - the total effect louder and rhythmic, and it protects the vocal cords.
By mid’s may also have a 10 second Rufpause.

4) power from the center to use a professional football is good at Anfeuern, bends slightly forward, stemmt hands in the waist just above the hip, is there a little pressure and enabled the Call allow his diaphragm …. the muscle should we feel it supports the loud sound. (Sample a few days before: hands in the waist, imagine that it blows fffff recently with a candle, then you can feel the diaphragm springs. This feathers repeatedly the Call.

5) Much drink does the voice well, especially normal tap water. The vocal is thanks. If you are safe will take thin, lukewarm fennel tea itself.

6) In the Fan equipment bag includes stimmpflegende Lutschbonbons. They should in the exceptional situation of a vocal EM viertelstündlich be taken. Recommendation: Isla Lutschpastillen moss from the pharmacy (without menthol), EibischTeigBonbons, blacks Johannesbeerpastillen.

7) From the emergency pharmacy: For the next day at the office helps THE homeopathic StimmMedikament the couriers: Arum triphyllium C 12 Five globules in a quarter litre of water every hour and drink a sip. This should also feature presentations on the day following the match in full vocal strength to succeed.

8) Trained voice is better: From May fundamentally strengthen the voice and slight build training on the EMZeit prepare. In the book “The power of voice” Ingrid Amon on a CD a basic warm-up in seven minutes. Not only for the European Championship, but it is best suited: three times a week to listen to, and participate with a Probegeheul vorhernachher the difference of StimmKraft hear themselves and learn ….

Alcohol is not only good for cheering. It’s also good for understanding Google Translate.
