Euro 2008

Awards of the Day: June 8th

Player of the Day: Lukas Podolski – one easy goal, one hard one. After featuring almost exclusively off the bench for Bayern this season in the Bundesliga, it’s hard to claim he was in form or anything close to the sort. Play him, Jurgen!

Team of the Day: Germany were the best, but Austria were the most impressive. So….

Language of the Day:
German. If it’s your official language, you either won or played way better than you were expected to.

Most Awkward Moment:
The one to the left. They’re just mutually respecting each other. Yeah, that’s it. Respect.

Bit of skill: Luka Modric. Great little dragback and go move.

Big mistake: Rene Aufhauser. If only he hadn’t done it…

Best Yellow Card: Emmanuel Pogatetz for his Materazi-esque hack job on Ivica Olic.

Oh, wait…

Imaginary Sniper Award: Olic, who got chopped down in the legs from behind, yet grabbed his face as though he’d been shot between the eyes while flopping around like he was having a Grand Mal seizure. Welcome to YouTube infamy, Ivica.

Player Most in Need of an Icepack for his Marbles: Lukas Podolski – When they showed the slow-mo shot of Podolski getting elbowed in his grapefruits before having them act as a rug for the Pole’s boot, I was near tears myself. No man has paid a greater price for a brace in history.

Asshole of the Day:
The guy who started up the petition to get Austria kicked out of the tournament. He was afraid they’d embarrass the country, but he and those who signed the petition were the only ones embarrassed.

Worst Cropping of a Picture Ever:

That’s Podolski in a Poland jersey, could’ve been way more effective if we saw him in the whole thing.

AJ: not England?

Anyway, have you seen ESPN’s soccer page right now? They have Podolski in a Polish jersey, and he’s right in front of Ballack, who, obviously, is in a German one. Why photoshop that and confuse people?
