Classic Euro Moments: The Euro ‘00 Final, France vs. Italy
Chris the Italy fan would not write about this one in a million years, so this France fan will tell you about Euro ‘00, which was co-hosted by Belgium and Netherlands.
This is France-Italy in the final, played at Feijenoord Stadion, Rotterdam. At the start of the video, France is down 0-1 when Sylvain Wiltord is subbed in for Cristophe Dugarry. A good move — France is down a goal until the the 90th minute, when Wiltord gets the equalizer. The teams end regulation time tied, 1-1.
Remember that 2000 was back in the days of the golden goal; the first team to score after the end of official time was the winner. Thirteen minutes into extra time, Robert Pires comes up the left and delivers the ball to David Trezeguet in the box. Trezeguet blasts it home left-footed. And France wins, 2-1.
What struck me as funniest about this video is that Sylvain Wiltord still looks exactly the same, as do Thuram and Trezeguet. (Except for that nasty little soul patch Trez wears these days.) I was also surprised at how many of these players are still playing. In just this clip I caught these names:
Thuram, Del Piero, Cannavaro, Wiltord, Pires, Totti, Henry, and Trezeguet.
Expect fireworks when these two teams meet again in the group stage.
Wow, I remember that night. I was standing outside the stadium watching the match on the large televisions. It seemed so long ago, I was only 14!
