Euro 2008 Means A Boost In TV Sales
There’s a report from a Thai site today which stated the country is looking towards a boom in the LCD market in the lead up to the tournament final on June 29th. A boom which is expected to double the market, actually. Very surprising, considering:
This is despite high inflation and a rising cost of living, which have forced a slowdown in growth for Thailand’s electrical-appliance industry so far this year.
No, Thailand is not participating in the tournament, but I found this story mighty interesting because I actually experienced this phenomenon not all that long ago - and I don’t live in Thailand - which makes me think we could replace Thailand with many other country names.
A little while back I moved and as one always expects during a move, stuff broke. One of those things was my television which was a personal favorite. Major disappointment because I don’t expect to be in my current locale a long time and buying a television wasn’t on my list of things to do.
Disappointment was quelled immediately upon entering Best Buy and going into full-on “guy mode”, and the accompanying female going into full-on eye-rolling mode. But still, wasn’t going to get anything fancy for 6 months or so. Summertime, place in view of the beach - who needs it? Until I realized the Euros were this summer, and I’d probably be watching each and every game.
So what did I do with Swissaustria at the front of my mind? I bought a big plasma, of course. (Cue a certain person’s eye-rolling.) Will I be the only person to do this? No. It may not take off in America, but it’d be mighty interesting to see the television sales in Europe from April to June of this year. I don’t doubt for a second we’d see at least a minor spike. Thailand is likely just an example of a similar phenomenon in many countries.
Therefore, now is a good time to hi-jack a truck carrying TVs and sell them for a slight knockdown - at least for the street entrepreneurs in the house.

Chris, I live in Singapore (it’s near to Thailand) and I remembered back then during the World Cup two years ago, there has been a lot of fuss in the media over getting a high-definition TV set (they kind of like came out with reasons like you can see a footballer’s sweat more easily on the TV screen…like as if I want to see it). I am not sure of the exact figures of people buying HD TV sets when the tournament was going on in Germany at that time, given people were only starting to warm up to HD technology (the media was only starting to talk more about HD technology then and the World Cup became an ‘excuse’).
I have no idea of the situation here ahead of the Euros but I know the local pay-TV service here even has a channel or two just in high-definition format for the matches. For me, I am alright without the HD version (the living room TV in my house had been bought way before the HD craze). As long as I can get to watch the matches, fine with me.
