Euro 2008 Players in the Champions League Final Today
Back in the world of club football, it’s the Champions League Final today. Cheslea vs Man Utd in Russia. There are, it turns out, exactly eleven players in the two squads who look likely to feature at Euro 2008 this summer. Four for Man Utd, seven for Chelsea.
Read on to see who they are (as if you didn’t already know)…
Man Utd:
Edwin Van der Sar (Netherlands)
Patrice Evra (France)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
Nani (Portugal)
Chelsea:
Petr Cech (Czech Republic)
Paulo Ferreira (Portugal)
Ricardo Carvalho (Portugal)
Claude Makelele (France)
Michael Ballack (Germany)
Florent Malouda (France)
Nicolas Anelka (France)
The statistical breakdown looks like this:
Portugal – 4 players
France – 4 players
Germany – 1 player
Netherlands – 1 player
Czech Republic – 1 player
So that makes Portugal and France co-favourites for Euro 2008 right? What, oh, it doesn’t work like that? Nevermind.
Still, worth keeping an eye on these players to see who does the business on the big occasion. And there’ll be five national team managers watching with their fingers crossed muttering “please no injuries, please no injuries” over and over again.

I’m actually surprised that there are so few. (But then again, I’m a France fan, so my perspective is skewed.)

Also, what’s funny is that in games like this where I’m a neutral, I tend to decide my loyalty based entirely on the number of French internationals. Which should make me a Chelsea fan. Except that I’m not that big on Makelele, and neither Malouda nor Anelka has been playing well. And I love Patrice Evra. So a fantastic game for Evra might (just might) win me over.

Interesting to see how the Portuguese decide their loyalty in this game. If it were me, I’d go with the two Portuguese players that didn’t fake injuries last time they were called up to the national team, and support Chelsea.
