On Romania’s alleged “solid” defense (laurie): A tactically defensive team (as opposed to one that’s simply overwhelmed and uncommitted) does not kick the ball out randomly, or fail to control it, or neglect to counter-attack. Romania’s ‘good result’ had only one main reason: the anemic French.
(Disclosure: I’m a Romania supporter, or was, until this game.)

For choosing to jerk each other off for the last 70 min. of the game, France and Romania should really only get 1/4 point each. We need more creativity in rule-making!
Holland shows that you CAN play full-throttle for 90 min. and win, even against strong defenders. And you don’t have to disgust your captive audience in order to succeed.
I cannot see France or Romania being able to get past Italy. As little as I like the Italian game, they have fighters on their squad and are a real team.

colman1860 is quite right, even though the ATR is USSF and not primary authority for UEFA, but there is an Austrian official who cited UEFA’s version as 11.4.11 saying nearly the same thing (I think it was on Reuter’s UK I saw that).

teevee commentators can be so annoying.

I thoroughly enjoyed Group C play today! Especially Italia’s drubbing.

40 minutes into the France match I thought to myself, I’m having Chelsea flashbacks to earlier this year… the blue jerseys helped enhance this feeling of, ‘oh-crap-is-this-going-to-go-down-as-a-nil-nil-draw?!’

Good for my heart muscle though!

The first goal wasnt controversial. It’s crystal clear in the rulebook:
Rule 11.11 – under section “advice to referees”:

“A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position. Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his or her off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee’s permission (and who thus requires the referee’s permission to return) is not included in determining offside position.”

This applies 100%.
