EuroVision: Gehen Sie hinaus!

June 16th, 2008 | By: Daryl | 3 Comments »

Apologies for the possibly mangled German. This is the moment where referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez banished both Jogi Löw and Josef Hickersberger to the stands for bickering during Germany’s 1-0 win over Austria.

They shook hands after so it’s all OK now, but sadly this little incident was the most dramatic moment of the game.

I’d like to call him a dumbass, but lets just say the referee had a bad day at the office. His biggest decision was to give a free-kick to Germany despite the tackle on Philip Lahm being totally legitimate (making contact with the ball first). Ballack scored a goal and bam, Austria is out.

Your German is spot on Daryl as well as your assessment of the match.

“despite the tackle on Philip Lahm being totally legitimate”

Not really, Ivanschütz makes the slightest of contact with the ball and lots of contact with Lahm. And Austria got away with some bad tackles during the match, so you take a little, give a little. With a bit more quality up front Austria could have probably done some real damage, not just to the German players.

Austria is out because they couldn’t score, plain and simple. And when you slide into an opponent from 5 o’clock, you need surgical precision to not see a card.
