Five Things We Learned in Swissaustria, June 12
1. Sex makes you good at football
Just ask the Croatian national team, who’ve been enjoying conjugal visits from their wives and girlfriends (maybe both?) at Euro 2008.
2. Germany are no longer favourites
Their defeat today means we have to rejig the pecking order. I’d suggest: Portugal, Netherlands and Spain are in the first tier of favourites, based on performances so far.
3. You can’t just stop being Brazilian
Roger did well today. But proud as he may be of his Polish citizenship, all the flicks and tricks made him look like a Brazilian who’d accidentally put on a Polish shirt.
4. The co-host curse is over
Austria and Switzerland seemed to be getting all the bad luck, and with Poland’s (hint of offside?) goal against the run of play today, the co-host curse seemed set to continue. But Howard Webb’s injury-time decision to award Austria a penalty broke the curse.
5. Being friends with Ivica Vastic would be superawesome
Not only is he the oldest goalscorer in the history of the Euros (38, well done old fella) he’s also now the proud owner of a lifetime supply of free beer.
Congucal visits? Not that I’m aware of. I have a teammate in Euros and he says the key is on the first day get in a fight or become someone’s bitch…

“with Poland’s (hint of offside?) goal”
Judging from the replays I’ve seen it was a clear offside goal. So maybe this makes up for the Smolarek offside call in the Germany game.
