Tartan Army Supporting Poland at Euro 2008
Great news for Poland: they just gained a whole new nation of fans. The Tartan Army - the famous Scotland supporters club - will officially be supporting Poland at Euro 2008 this summer, and the rest of the country looks set to follow.
With two victories over France in qualifying, the Scots had hopes of supporting their own team in Swissaustria. That dind’t work out as hoped, but seems Scots want to support a team at Euro 2008 anyway. And so Poland are the new Scotland.
The strangest thing about this is that it actually makes sense…
It’s not as if the Tartan Army has just picked a team at random. Apparently 40,000 Poles have moved to Scotland since Poland joined the European Union in 2004, so there’ll already be a sizeable Scottish-based Polish community supporting Leo Beenhakker’s team. The Tartan Army and other Scots will just be joining the party.

I would have expected them to support Croatia.
Oh. Wait. That’s the Irish.

It really does make sense. There are a ton of Poles in Scotland, as you mentioned. The last time I was in Inverness, there was basically a Polish quarter setting up, with a street filled with shop signs in Polish, and there’s even a Polish-language radio station. There’s also the small matter of Artur Boruc, to get the Celtic fans interested.

Is Englang supporting Italy? You know, for Don Fabio?
And props to Scotland for not just going with Germany, which would totally be understandable because they’re so similar. Scotland is full of Polish immigrants, just like the German national team.

Also: Damn. If I’d known you were posting this, I would have sent you my photo of the guy in the tartan loincloth after the Scotland-France game.

Laurie, anything that brings back any memories of Scotland-France is more than welcome. A great time that Scots will hold in their memory for many years … or until we actually qualify for a tournament.

I wonder if all the Huns in the Tartan Army will be bringing their “Vodoo No Worky”, in reference to Boruc crossing himself before every game, banner…Come to think of it, will they be bringing the “Protestant and Proud!” banner in support of the mostly Kafflik nation?
*Not saying that ALL Tartan Army supporters are bigots…err Rangers Fans, and I would say it is a small minority, but they sadly exist…

Luckily, there are no bigoted Celtic fans … come on, Matt. You’re better than that.

No bigoted Celtic fans following the following poland. Do you think any Celtic fans will be following Spain in Euro 2008 and cheering on Nacho Novo or Cueller? It reeks of hypocrisy and I’m sure guys like Boruc and Zurawski would rather not have their support.

Thank You Scotland It really makes sense .
