Top Three Headed Goals in European Championship History Are…

April 4th, 2008 | By: Daryl | 1 Comment »

UEFA’s official Euro 2008 website held a vote recently to determine the best headed goal in European Championship history. The winner was João Pinto’s diving header against England at Euro 2000, with 59% of the vote. Rui Costa crossed it in low and Pinto beat Sol Campbell to the ball and angled it beyond David Seaman into the far corner. The look on Seaman’s face afterwards says everything.

The second and third placed headers are below:

With 32% of the vote was Henrik Larsson’s effort for Sweden against Bulagria at Euro 2004 (also a great diving header) came second.

With 8% of the vote, Angelos Charisteas’ goal against Portugal in the Euro 2004 final came third. It wasn’t a diving header, but it was the only goal of the game and won the tournament for Greece.

UEFA are now polling for best volleyed Euro goal of all time, with Van Basten’s Euro ‘88 goal against the USSR, Ronnie Whelan’s volley against the same team in the same tournament and Marc Overmars’ volley against Yugoslavia at Euro 200. Click here for details on how to vote.

I’ve always been a big fan of three-headed goals myself. ;-)
