Vote: Who Will Win Euro 2008?
Well, Sunday was a little better for our prediction ability. After our complete failure to pick the winners in the first three games, 57% of us picked Spain over Italy.
(Although this number seems to have gone up by a few percentage points since I checked at the end of the game. What’s up with that?)
And now it’s down to four teams. The speedy Spaniards, the newly-Arshavin-ed Russians, the methodical Germans, and the never-say-die Turks.
Who do you think will take home the Henri Delaunay trophy next weekend?

Boycott the 2010 World Cup. Mbeki is protecting a murderous dictator. Mbeki’s legacy will forever be tied to his inaction. http://zimsolidarity.blogspot.com/

I really think the most underestimated team (by you – the fans – not the teams which are still in) is the Nationalmannschaft.
e.g if C. Ronaldo scores by a free-kick, it’s a thing of beauty, pure skill ’cause he’s the most complete player in the world etc. if M. Ballack does, it’s just luck, maybe simple power…
Many of you say we have no technically skilled (defensive) players, just take a closer look at P. Lahm or explain why most of Portugal’s shots on target had been from 30+ meters. Could go on and on… (Podolski ftw)
I hope and I believe Germany’s team can prove they deserve the title in the next two matches.

Horst – though I agree that Germany doesn’t get credit for skill points the way Portugal does, I don’t think anyone calls a Michael Ballack free kick “luck”. He’s a great technician at free kicks, and I think he gets a fair bit of credit for that.

I haven’t read any negative remarks about Ballack’s free kick either. Alan Hansen recently wrote in the Telegraph that Germany can’t match the quality of the English players (except for maybe Ballack and Lahm) but their “winning mentality” compensates for that. Those cliches are here to stay, but no need to overly focus on them because there are enough articles which also give a lot of credit to the team.

Timba: I agree with you but this is not the place for this discussion. Hopefully the admin of this site will create a topic for this on the front page after the Euro. South Africa is a disaster waiting to happen. The unreliable infrastructure, the rampant crime, the anti-immigrant violence, and Mugabe’s chief enabler Mbeki are all reason enough to move the World Cup to a more stable country. USA 2010!!!
