Marco, I saw that. Keep in mind that Domenech is the guy who made Vieira captain. With another coach, his future is uncertain.

I don’t think there’s really any question of Domenech staying. It was his rigidity that killed the team — his inability to let go of what worked in the past to create a team for the future. Now they need to bring in a risk taker who’s not afraid to tear some things down in order to build them up again.

I haven’t read the autobiography, but my guess is that it dated from Vieira’s time at Arsenal when van Nistelrooy was at ManU. Plenty of opportunities for bad blood to develop between guys on those two teams.

Vieira said himself on French TV that he was arguing with a French “supporter” who insulted him. Who knows if he told the truth. I believe he did.

Bah. Athletes argue all the time. Hockey players sometimes drop the gloves and fight in practice. We see football (North American) players sometimes fight too.

But it does show that this team probably was probably rudderless.

Look, it’s not easy to replace Zidane. I don’t care what anyone says, no matter how deep your team is you can’t replace certain players that easily. Italy was clearly destabilized without Cannavaro and are only now learning to cope with it.

Add that wacko Domenech to the equation and…well, you know the rest.
