Why Cristiano Ronaldo Can Never Be the Best Player in the World

June 20th, 2008 | By: Daryl | 57 Comments »

A good many wingers would be perfectly happy leaving Euro 2008 with a goal and an assist. But we expected a bit more of Cristiano Ronaldo.

He came into this tournament as (some say) the best player in the world. In every game, he was the man defences feared. But he didn’t really deliver.

Yes, he beat up on Czech Republic. But against Germany, when it really mattered, he couldn’t quite take the game to the opposition.

And he definitely didn’t win many friends with this stop, drop and roll (spotted on 101 Great Goals)

But diving and arrogance and winking and silly haircuts and agitating for a move to Madrid don’t prevent Ronaldo from being the best player in the world. Being a winger does.

Here’s my hypothesis, feel free to rip it to pieces:

Though his position is fluid, Cristiano Ronaldo is ultimately a winger. Wingers can do brilliant things, but they’re always going to put in streaky performances. And here’s why: wingers don’t control the game. They’re dependent on how their team plays and reliant on someone getting the ball to them. They’re also dependent on what their striker or strikers do. For example Ronaldo’s performances weren’t helped by Portugal’s lack of a striker for him (and the other wingers) to play off of.

Ronaldo is always capable of getting the ball and running at people. And that’s always going to be dangerous and exciting. But because his instinct is to get the ball and take off at top speed, he’s always going to be at the mercy of what other players are doing. Basically, he’s never going to be the player Michael Ballack was last night.

Ballack put in a proper match-winning performance yesterday. As mentioned here, the man covered every blade of grass for Germany and controlled the game with possession and smart passing. He was in charge of the game in a way C-Ron never will be.

So while C-Ron will continue to impress in Manchester or Madrid, and YouTube and elsewhere will continue to fill itself with videos of C-Ron stepovers, goals and dives, until he’s capable of taking a game in his hands a shaping it he’ll never be the best player in the world.

Ronaldo isn’t really one of the most talented footballers out there. His tricks and flicks and whatnot are somewhat natural, but more practiced than anything.

His teammates and coaches are the first to say how hard he really trains, and it certainly pays off. However, players like Cassano and Quaresma are inherently more talented. They may not get to Ronaldo’s level because of their attitude (then again, Ronaldo may not get to where he should be because of his own), but I think that they are naturally better.

Anyway, it doesn’t really matter. No matter what Ronaldo does, he will never be liked by some and always be loved by others. I hope he gets better because I like his style, but I’m sure others want to see him crash and burn so that they can say “I told you so”.

That said, I hope he can one of the leaders to take Portugal to WC2010 glory.

For the love of God, did no one watch the game? Yes at first it looks like Ronaldo has a really delayed reaction (and oscar winning performance) but they repeated the foul, it was not the initial foul but the german player who stepped on his foot when walking away while Ronaldo was on the ground. This is why he was given a yellow card, for stepping on Ronaldo not fouling him. Watch it again before you hate. He may not be the best in the world, but how can he show what he’s got when he has 3 players constantly on his back. I know its part of the game, but you can’t deny he’s talented.

First off,

All the Germans should be tested for roids. They are far too big, and don’t look anything like soccer players. With their huge physique, and their beards it was like watching a scene out of the movie deliverance.

Ronaldo is a great player…cries like a baby, but a great player. Pound for pound one of the best! He could walk around anyone other player in the world, because he is so bloody fast that no one can catch him. The problem is that the rest of the chops with the exception of Deco play with no hart! The first gold that the Squard heads put in against portugal was a result of POOR MARKING. U had 4 defensemen watching the winger as he ripped down the wing, and crossed it into a bleech blonde striker that could be seen from Mars with that hair cut. How the chops missed him is beyond me! Next Portugal problem…Are you telling me that in a country of 10 million people that Nuno Gomes is the best striker they have? 10 million people Nuno Gomes? Did I say 10 million people Nuno Gomes? Italy looks in their second divison, and finds a guy like TONI? Seriously hire some quality scouts and go find a 7 foot tall striker that can score from center.

Back to Ronaldo…When you are the best everyone hates you! That is just the way it is! People complain about him, because he is not on their team. When your on top of the world its a LONELY PLACE!

At Nic’s request I rewatched the youtube clip of the incident and noticed 2 things that I didn’t notice before. First, the german guy didn’t even make contact with Ronaldo (although he tried to) and Ronaldo dove. Then as he walked by he stepped on his foot for diving. Then about a second later when Ronaldo was sure than the ref was in the area, he starts his acting routine.

Unbelievable.

Ronaldo is a joke, just another hyped up over-rated piece of crap like Donovan. “Donovan will win us the World Cup” – U.S.A. fans in 2006

Do you know how many kids worldwide.. particularly in Brazil, who can do the same moves he can? Why did he get to go to Manchester United at a very young age and get to stay on their starting line-up for years, wasting possession and dishonoring the classic “honest” English style, when most players would be happy to play in such a big for 1 or 2 years in the prime of their careers. Is it because he’s 6 foot 2″? Is it because his dad and grandfather were famous footballers? Is it because they were after a pretty boy to recruit more girls into the sport (are at least sell more replica shirts)?

Ronaldo showed his true class yesterday, giving Klose a free header and then blaiming his team-mates.

“10 million people Nuno Gomes?”

I would dare to say that, right now, yes. He is the best striker. Not a born finnisher but surely more trustworthy than Postiga or Hugo Almeida.

And, being Portuguese, I’m telling you that there’s no such a thing as a top level striker in Portugal ;)

On the topic of the post, I might say that Ronaldo is indeed overrated. However, it’s silly to say that wingers will never get to be World’s Best. From that point of view, Ronaldo (the Brazillian one) as a striker would never get the Fifa World Player of the Year (and twice, if I’m not mistaken) nor would Weah, van Basten or even, for justice’s sake, Cannavaro as a central defender.

Figo has been mentioned has the example of a winger that could control the game but that only happened later in his career, when he lost the short acceleration peak and dribble capacity he had before. Back in 2001 he still was dazzling through full backs (on a different way of C. Ronaldo though).

In my humble opinion, Ronaldo still gets short to being the best of the best, but only due to his poor mental capacity to handle the pressure in the big games.

Cheers,

Bastein Schweinstager was by far the best player in the game. He is a winger too, and he changed more of the game then Ronaldo because of the balance in the German team. In a team of power, Bastein was the perfect pick to portray the balance in the team with his superb speed and ball control.

On the flip side, when Ronaldo is in a Portuguese team that is based on the elements of ball control, speed, dribbling, and flashyness, he doesn’t stand out to much. But in England when he plays with the role players like Giggs, Evra, J.S. Park, Tevez, Hargreaves, and Carrick, he stands out because they are role players. The Portuguese team will win if they have a more balance in the team, and instead of playing Bosingwa who is in the opposite half of the field he should be in, play someone else. Keeping 3 in the defense and then putting Nani in the midfield would have served him much better then Pepe and Bosingwa playing next to Nuno Gomes.

Bastein Schweinstager is crap!

Germany will lose to Turkey because they play with hart.

PS – Portugal has some colonies in a few african nations they should go find a 7′ tall striker who can score goals. For years they have been a team that can’t find the net from the striker position. Or perhaps Portugal can citizenize more Brazilians, and make a really good team.

i like the offside and read it multiple times a day but really you all hate him and it doesn’t have anything to do w/ his actual skill…the diving and sideshow stuff obviously clouds all (and if not all then a damn lot of you) of your judgement. the argument is that he is a winger and he can only run at players….ok with that as the premise what changes the game most? and by that i ask what changes how the other team approaches the game after it (whatever it may be) happens. the quick answer is a goal. i don’t see how a goal isn’t the barometer for who is the biggest game changer, whether it’s creating a goal for someone else(someone like andrea pirlo), someone who poaches goals off of someone like pirlo(ruud or pippo type), or a player that creates goals for himself which is obviously what ronaldo falls under. the funny thing is he does all three even if it’s in different ways than the others it’s just a different means to the same end. he scored 42 goals this year. lots of them by running at people, lots of them by being in the right place at the right time ala ruud or pippo…and lots of them for his teammates by dragging 2-3 sometimes 4 defenders with him. how do those sorts of things not change games? how is that more effective than ballack? for one day ballack was better? for one day ballack had a MUCH better supporting cast…like that’s even an argument. nuno gomes or klose and podolski? really? even close. paulo ferreira or lahm? really?

he was easily the best player in the world this year…that it’s even clouded by people on this site is laughable. did you not watch the league? are you just tired of hearing about him? that’s fine…but it’s like people saying that kobe bryant isn’t the best individual player because of things he does off the court or how he reacts to referee’s calls. or people trying to say alex rodriguez is not the best baseball player for the same reason. it’s all just thinly veiled bullshit code for “i hate him”.

As others have mentioned, if you saw the replay a German player actually played dirty and intentionally stomped on Ronaldo’s foot.

Ariza Makukula didn’t come from an ex-colony but he’s tall, oh he is. But he can’t properly pass a ball 5m away from his position let alone place shots.

I don’t understand Real. Who needs Ronaldo when you’ve got Raul, Robben, van Nistelrooy, Robinho and Sneijder on your team.

…for all fair weather friends of Ronaldo, when his team is doing well and he produces great opportunities…everyone loves him. But when his team lacks chemistry and imagination, and not being able to get him quality balls, people criticize!
Ballack did ok, despite diving and also pushing off to make room for his header…poor officiating.
finally, apparently he’s doing something right, he scores a bunch of goals for the premier!!!!!

Yes, Ronaldo’s got talents and he’s got some skills. But I disagree if people call him the BEST player in the world or even the MOST TALENTED player in the world. Since the argument is on “Best player in the world”, I agree with what Daryl’s written. While CR7 (really crappy nickname, by the way) has talents, he is by no means the most talented guy in the sport–although he makes it up by training hard, this talent he mostly uses it for himself. He is his own player, not a team player. The best player in the world has to play for his team mates, for his team and for the sport, not just to the crowd. And it doesn’t help the fact that he’s conceited and has a huge “me-love” attitude.

So what if he tricks and turns and flicks? Until he believes in this thing called teamwork (not like the “solo” and “diving” attitude he believes in right now), he would never be the greatest winger in the world, let alone the greatest player.

I think the fact that Ronaldo is such a big name right now is because of his pretty face and his attitude that appeals to the audience, making him something like a brand. In short, I’m saying that he’s an overhyped overrated guy whose real talent is knowing how to sell himself.

I must say, I hate Ronaldo with guts. I don’t usually dislike someone, but with him, I have to say that. Yeah, he may have some talents but I think the media spoils him too much. He isn’t a irreplaceable player or the one who can change the whole match. He’s just a good player with some spotlights and guess what, the media is over eager to kiss his feet. And look at his trick, always ready to rolling on the ground to earn some free-kick or penalty. I don’t understand why someone can be so hyped up about him.

Moreover, the best player, in my opinion, must have not only talents but also personality. That’s what made Pélé, Zidane, Figo… simply the best. And I think in that field, no one can argue C.Ronaldo has it. Just think about Kaka. I mention him because someone keeps saying Ronaldo will beat Kaka to be the Fifa Player of the year 2008 =)) I dare to say that Kaka has more talents than Ronaldo ever does. And personality too. Have you ever heard of any of Kaka’s scandal? And just think he stays loyal to AC Milan even though he gets so much offer from Real, *unlike someone*

To conclude it all, C.Ronaldo is just overrated and really, I hope after this Euro, he will be put the right place where he should belong. Maybe being in Real is good for him, where he know he will not always be the center of attention.

I’m not Portugese but Figo will always be the Pride of Portugal! Ronaldo is Portugal’s shame!

check out this old screen-saver: http://screensavers.msnemotions.org/screensavers/23.Culture/25.Brands/1324.Nike—Luis-Figo.html

Figo only needed 1 attempt to score, from a free-kick, or from anywhere. Ronaldo needs about 10 and a lucky deflection.

Figo was like some Antonio Banderas, Ronaldo is a Ryan Phillippe (look in google if you don’t remember)

we’re talking about this year though right? who was better than him THIS year? i dont recall anyone saying he’s better than zidane for fuck’s sake…he’d have to have a season like he did this year many more times and change and evolve as a player on top of that to be in the conversation. but who was better this year? it wasn’t messi, he was hurt. and it wasn’t ricky kaka either. he was the best this year, regardless of press or banging whores w/ anderson or whatever.

Ronaldo played in MU and with Portugal with an injury in his right foot (some bone cartilage broken), the same that was stepped by the german player. He can fall a lot and dive, but this time it was a shameless aggression that should receive the red card.

As a portuguese i´m proud of players like Figo, Rui Costa and Cristiano Ronaldo, but it will be a great mistake if he leaves Manchester United to go to Real Madrid. Like Figo did, when he left Barcelona to join RM.
Like it or not he is, or will be, the best player in the world.

How can he be compared to the world’s best?

style, speed, and tricks – he is very far off compare to ronaldinho who was much much faster.

Freekicks- why is he taking all the freekicks at man united when they have giggs, or even hargreeves who proved that he can kick better than ronaldo

C.Ronaldo vs Ronaldo 9- can it be because his name is also ronaldo that helped to boost his career? R9 was probably the most fearful striker ever seen in football. but now no one seems to remember him because another player has same name. but in my opion R9 was at a much higer level than cristiano.

winger- true that most wingers cannot control the game. but what about david beckham? ronaldinho? and many more. being a top class player means that u need to have a differnt vision. A beautiful asist is as good as a world class goal. passing is the best way to move the ball around on the football pitch, the ball always treavels faster than the person

diving and behaviors- a player with heart would get back up when he got knocked down or try not to stay down from the light tackles. the best players never needed to cheat . bpecause they are best. ( maradonna used his hand, but at least he was trying to score)

I admitt he has massive skills, but this boy really need to learn how to use it to become a real footbal legend

Ronaldo is not a winger for man u, all he does is stand up front which is known as a striker. People keep saying he scored all 40+ goals as a winger when he was clearly doing up front and didnt track down once (rooney tracks back for him). His speed and strength wont last forever, infact they are usually the first attritudes to leave a footballer, and once this happens people will forget all about him. The only reason people believe he is best player in the world is because he is the only name you ever hear. he is on every nike advert, and all you hear on sky sports is the boy wonder ronaldo and all this bullshit. i honestly believe every1 working for sky sports would suck his balls becuz they never fuck up about him. messi and torres are far better than him :D
